Frequently Asked Questions — Multi-Magnetic Cat Doors
Yes. The door stays locked by default. Only a cat wearing the C-M collar magnet can trigger it to open. Any cat, animal or person without the magnet cannot open the door from the outside. This makes it the most effective battery-free solution for keeping neighbourhood cats out without restricting your own cat’s access.
No. The Catwalk® multi-magnetic system is entirely passive — it uses the physical interaction between the collar magnet and the door’s internal magnets to release and reset the lock. No batteries, no power source, no app and no microchip reader required. This makes it more reliable than electronic alternatives and eliminates the risk of the door failing due to flat batteries or power cuts.
A microchip cat flap uses an electronic reader to detect your cat’s implanted microchip — it requires batteries and electronics to function. The Catwalk® multi-magnetic system uses no electronics at all. Instead, a small physical magnet on your cat’s collar interacts with internal magnets in the door to mechanically release the lock. There are no batteries to replace, no programming required, and no risk of electronic failure. The trade-off is that your cat must wear a collar with the C-M magnet attached.
Yes. The C-M collar magnet pack includes two magnets, so you can give one to each of two cats — both will be able to use the door freely. If you have more than two cats, additional C-M packs can be ordered from the Spares & Accessories page.
The G-MCDW is a glass fitting model — it installs into a glass panel via a round 245mm cut-out made by your glazier, and suits glass from 3mm to 26mm thick. The W-MCDW (white) and W-MCDB (brown) are wood fitting models — they install directly into timber, PVC or metal door panels and are suitable for DIY installation. All three models use the same C-M collar magnet.
No. The C-M collar magnet is small, lightweight and designed for everyday wear on a standard cat collar. It has been used safely by cat owners worldwide since 1999. As with any collar accessory, always use a safety-release (snap-away) collar to ensure your cat can free itself if the collar catches on something.
The multi-magnetic models include a 4-way manual locking dial in addition to the magnetic locking system. You can set the door to fully open (magnetic lock bypassed), in-only, out-only, or fully locked (overriding the magnet). This gives you full manual control when needed — for example, to keep your cat in overnight or to allow access without the collar magnet during training.
Replacement C-M collar magnets are available from the Spares & Accessories page. Each C-M pack contains two magnets, so it is a good idea to keep a spare. Until a replacement arrives, you can set the 4-way locking dial to fully open to allow your cat normal access.
The glass fitting G-MCDW has a 170×155mm flap opening, and the wood fitting W-MCDW and W-MCDB have a 160×140mm flap opening. Both suit most standard domestic cats. For larger cats or small dogs, consider the glass fitting maxi pet door range which offers a larger 195×185mm flap, though this does not include the magnetic locking feature.
