Frequently Asked Questions — Dog Doors for Glass
Yes — but not into existing toughened or double-glazed glass. Glass cannot be cut after it has been toughened. Instead, the glass panel is replaced with a new one that has the round cut-out hole pre-cut at the time of manufacture. Your glazier orders the replacement panel to spec, fits it into your door or window frame, and then installs the Dogwalk® dog door into the hole. It’s a common job for glaziers and takes just a few hours from start to finish. Contact us for the correct cut-out diameter for your chosen model.
For a glass sliding door (ranch slider), the slim line models are the best choice — the G-DDSLC (clear) or G-DDSLW (white) for medium to larger dogs, or the G-IDDSLC / G-IDDSLW for smaller breeds. The slim line frame is specifically designed to sit flush within the track depth of a sliding door panel without interfering with the door’s operation. Yes. Because the glass panel must be replaced rather than cut on-site, a glazier is required. The glazier measures the opening, orders a replacement glass panel with the round cut-out pre-cut to the correct diameter, removes the existing panel, fits the new one, and installs the dog door. The Dogwalk® round cut-out design is preferred by glaziers over rectangular alternatives because it is faster to specify, temper, and fit. Yes — the dual glaze Dogwalk® models are specifically designed for double-glazed glass units. The G-DDC, G-DDW, G-DDB (standard) and G-IDDC, G-IDDW, G-IDDB (intermediate) models accommodate glass from 3mm up to 32mm, covering most modern double-glazed panels. The deeper frame bridges both panes of the double-glazed unit and maintains the thermal performance of the door. The existing double-glazed panel must be replaced with a new unit that has the cut-out pre-cut — your glazier can arrange this.
Both have the same flap opening and cut-out diameter within the same size range — the difference is the frame depth. Slim line models (G-DDSLC, G-DDSLW, G-IDDSLC, G-IDDSLW) have a lower-profile frame designed to clear the track of a sliding door and suit thinner single-pane glass (4–20mm). Dual glaze models (G-DDC, G-DDW, G-DDB, G-IDDC, G-IDDW, G-IDDB) have a deeper frame accommodating glass up to 32mm, making them the right choice for double-glazed units and thicker glass panels.
Measure your dog at the shoulder — the flap opening height should be at least equal to this measurement. The intermediate dog door (240×215mm flap, 320mm cut-out) suits small to medium breeds. The standard dog door (300×270mm flap, 385mm cut-out) suits medium to semi-large breeds. For very small dogs or large cats, the maxi pet door (195×185mm flap, 267mm cut-out) may also be suitable. Dual glaze standard and intermediate models cover the widest range — 3mm to 32mm — making them compatible with most modern double-glazed units.
