Frequently Asked Questions — Dog Doors for Wooden Doors

Yes — the Dogwalk® wood fitting range is designed specifically for installation into timber, PVC, hollow-core and metal doors. You cut a rectangular opening in the door panel, then assemble the inner and outer frames from each side. No glazier is required. Models suit panels from 5mm to 52mm thick depending on the model. Contact us if you’re unsure which model suits your door.
The Small dog door (W-SDDW, W-SDDB, W-SDDTW, W-SDDTB) has a usable opening of 180mm wide × 227mm high (flap panel 180 × 240mm) and suits small dogs up to about 360mm at the shoulder, such as Jack Russells, Cavaliers, Pugs and French Bulldogs. The Medium dog door (W-DDW, W-DDB) has a larger 270mm × 307mm usable opening (flap panel 270 × 320mm) — specially developed for medium to semi-large dogs such as Beagles, Border Collies, Spaniels and Blue Heelers, up to a shoulder height of 450–500mm. Measure your dog standing: width at the widest point + 25mm must fit inside the opening width, body depth (top of shoulders to bottom of chest) + 25mm inside the opening height, and fit the door with the bottom of the opening level with the belly. See how to measure your dog or use the Pet Door Selector for a personalised recommendation.
Both share the same usable opening within the same size range. The slim line small dog door models (W-SDDW, W-SDDB) suit panels from 11mm to 30mm thick — ideal for standard hollow-core and lightweight timber or PVC doors. The tunnel models (W-SDDTW, W-SDDTB) include a self-lining tunnel extension that accommodates thicker panels up to 52mm, suited to solid timber doors or double-skin walls. No cutting of the tunnel is required.
Yes. Dogwalk® wood fitting dog doors are designed for DIY installation using basic tools such as a jigsaw, drill and screwdriver. No glazier is required. Cut a rectangular opening in the door panel, then assemble the inner and outer frames. The tunnel liner on tunnel models fits without any cutting. Full step-by-step installation instructions are included with every door and available to download above.
The Medium dog door (W-DDW, W-DDB) suits panels from 5mm to 36mm. The small dog door slim line (W-SDDW, W-SDDB) suits panels from 11mm to 30mm. The small dog door tunnel (W-SDDTW, W-SDDTB) suits panels from 11mm to 52mm. Measure your door panel thickness before ordering — and include any weather strip or architrave if it adds to the effective depth the unit must pass through. Contact us if you need help confirming compatibility.
Dogwalk® wood fitting dog doors are compatible with timber, PVC, hollow-core, and metal door panels. They are not suitable for glass panels — for glass door or ranch slider installations see the glass fitting dog door range. Always check your door panel thickness against the model specification before ordering.
All Dogwalk® wood fitting dog door models are available in white and brown. White suits painted timber doors, white PVC doors, and modern interiors. Brown suits natural timber, stained doors, and traditional homes. Both colours use the same UV-stabilised polycarbonate flap and internal components — colour is a finish choice only and does not affect performance or flap size.
Yes. All Dogwalk® wood fitting models include a weather-resistant polycarbonate flap and a brush or foam seal around the frame to reduce draughts and keep rain and insects out. The 4-way manual locking dial allows you to set the door to fully open, in-only, out-only, or fully locked — giving you full control over access and draught management at all times.
