⚠️ Important: Cat doors for glass cannot be installed into existing toughened or double-glazed glass. The glass panel must be replaced with the hole pre-cut at the time of manufacture. Your glazier can arrange this — contact us if you need guidance on the correct cut-out size.
Quick answer

Can you put a cat door in a glass door? Yes — a glazier replaces the glass panel with a new one that has a round hole (245mm or 267mm) pre-cut at manufacture, then fits the Catwalk® cat door into the hole. Existing toughened or double-glazed glass cannot be cut on-site. Most installations are complete in under an hour once the panel arrives.

Watch: How a Glass Fitting Cat Door Is Installed

Watch the install — then give your glazier this
  • Round cut-out size: 245mm (original & multi-magnetic) or 267mm (maxi)
  • Your glass type & thickness: single or double glazing, 3–28mm
  • The fitting instructions from the box — glass range and clamping detail

Any qualified glazier can do this — most complete it in under an hour. Toughened or sealed units need a new panel with the hole pre-cut.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cat Doors for Glass

Yes — but not into existing toughened or double-glazed glass. Glass cannot be cut after it has been toughened. Instead, the glass panel is replaced with a new one that has the round cut-out hole pre-cut at the time of manufacture. Your glazier orders the replacement panel to spec, fits it into your door or window frame, and installs the Catwalk® cat door into the hole. It is a straightforward job for any glazier and typically takes a few hours. Contact us for the correct cut-out diameter for your chosen model.
For a glass sliding door (ranch slider), the slim line models are the best choice. The G-SDDSLC (clear) or G-SDDSLW (white) maxi slim line suits large cats and small dogs, and the slim line frame is designed to sit within the track depth of a sliding door panel without interfering with the door's operation. For most standard domestic cats, the G-CDC or G-CDW original cat door is also suitable in single-pane ranch sliders up to 10mm. Use the Pet Door Selector for a personalised recommendation.
Yes. Because the glass panel must be replaced rather than cut on-site, a glazier is required. The glazier measures the opening, orders a replacement glass panel with the round cut-out pre-cut to the correct diameter, removes the existing panel, fits the new one, and installs the cat door. The Catwalk® round cut-out design is preferred by glaziers over rectangular alternatives because it is faster to specify, temper, and fit. Yes — the dual glaze maxi pet door models are specifically designed for double-glazed glass units. The G-SDDC, G-SDDW and G-SDDB accommodate glass from 3mm up to 28mm, covering most modern double-glazed panels. The deeper frame bridges both panes of the double-glazed unit while maintaining thermal performance. The existing double-glazed panel must be replaced with a new unit that has the cut-out pre-cut — your glazier can arrange this.
Both have the same 267mm cut-out diameter and the same 187mm × 190mm usable opening (flap panel 187 × 203mm) — the difference is the frame depth. The slim line (G-SDDSLC, G-SDDSLW) has a lower-profile frame suited to glass up to 21mm, ideal for ranch sliders and thinner panels. The dual glaze (G-SDDC, G-SDDW, G-SDDB) has a deeper frame accommodating glass up to 28mm, making it the right choice for double-glazed units and thicker glass panels.
Measure your cat standing: width at the widest point and body depth (top of shoulders to bottom of chest). Width + 25mm must fit inside the usable opening width and body depth + 25mm inside the usable opening height; fit the door with the bottom of the opening about 100–150mm off the floor, level with your cat's belly. The original cat door (G-CDC, G-CDW) has a usable opening of 165mm wide × 180mm high (flap panel 165 × 193mm) and suits cats up to about 7kg. The Maxi pet door range has a 187mm × 190mm usable opening (flap panel 187 × 203mm) for larger cats (7–10kg) and small dogs up to about 300mm at the shoulder. The multi-magnetic G-MCDW has a 155mm × 157mm usable opening (flap panel 155 × 170mm) for cats up to about 7kg. See how to measure your pet, use the Pet Door Selector, or contact us if you're unsure.
The G-MCDW stays locked by default. Your cat wears a small C-M collar magnet which triggers the door to unlock automatically as they approach. No batteries or microchip reader required — it is entirely mechanical. Other cats or animals without the collar magnet cannot open the door, making it an effective way to keep neighbourhood cats out while allowing your own cat free access.
Catwalk® glass fitting cat doors are available in clear, white and black across most models. Clear suits aluminium joinery and modern glass doors. White suits white-frame joinery. Black suits dark-frame ranch sliders and contemporary homes. The G-MCDW multi-magnetic model is currently available in white only.
